Kasun Pathirana presents his first solo exhibition titled Inner Beauty, a series of drawings whereby the artist draws parallels between mythology and religion. The artist draws references from Medusa and Michelangelo’s David via the interlocking, serpentine, worm-like forms and structural detail in technique. The monstrous forms are intended to repel the viewer, implicative of both spiritual and sexual connotations, the imagery is intentionally contradictory to the exhibition’s title, as are the culmination of references used by the artist. This series of drawings, both raw and unapologetically in-your-face, play on a multitude of themes from the delusion of gender to God’s creation of mankind. Using delicate paper doilies as a surface for his smaller works they symbolize both desire and need. The artist’s figurative larger drawings on paper incorporates details from wooden carvings typical in Sri Lankan traditional architecture, a reference to cultural norms. Kasun Pathirana graduated from the University of Visual and Performing Arts in 2016.
